NZ National Race #2: Nelson - Sunday January 19, 2003

What a race! It was a scorching day in Nelson and perfect conditions for a full on short lap race in the Maitai Valley. The course was around 6km long with a steady but tough 3km uphill in the blistering heat and a 2km technical downhill winding amongst the pines. Florian Vogel from Switzerland blitzed the Men’s Pro Elite field with lap times of around 14-15 minutes. The Women competed over 6 laps and averaged around 18-19 minutes per lap.

I was happy with a solid first race and my 3rd place. It was difficult to know how my training was going without any racing and time off the bike over the past few months. I wanted to get back into the racing and be competitive. I was totally relaxed and had a great time out there. The downhill just rocked. Next race is this weekend in Levin.
